This year my calla lilies are
blooming later than usual. In the previous years they bloomed in
January-February. We are now more than half the way into March, and only now
the flowers appear.
I enjoy having fresh cut flowers
on my dining table or dresser. So I picked two calla lilies and put them in a
vase in my bedroom.
Nowadays I rarely buy cut flowers
from the stores. Most of the cut flowers sold here are grown in Latin America,
which does not really make sense to me.
I understand that lower production
costs lead to higher profits, which are good for the economy, and yet…
Besides, being snipped off days or perhaps weeks prior, they don’t last long outside of
the refrigerators.
But as I said, I like having
flowers in my home. And my own tiny yard is where they come from.
Now I have calla lilies, and my
roses will start blooming soon too. I only have a few rose bushes, but even a
single rose on my dresser looks luxurious to me. Later in the summer I will
have gladioluses, which make lavish bouquets. I’d love to have some tulips too,
but so far I haven't had much luck growing them.

So wonderful to be able to grow such lovely blooms in your own yard. These were my mom's favorite flower. xo
I totally agree with you. Homegrown are the most sensible thing to enjoy. I'm glad you took on the topic. :-)
Oh how glorious these are - so pretty. What a different season than Colorado/USA where we could still have lots of snow!
Dearest Olga,
There seems to be a reaction to the weather behavior and to the moisture that could be gathered by the bulbs and root stocks for creating new blossoms. You make me homesick for ours... we lost so many during the way too hot summers of 2010 and 2011 + drought. LOVE Calla lilies in a vase as they are such pure beauties!
Hugs to you,
Mariette
Beautiful Calla lilies Olga, if it were not for the flowers sold here during our harsh cold snowy winter I would not be right in the head..I need flowers all the time..I'm not sure where they come from but we have lots of them and they always seem fresh and last a while..we are under another Snow storm conditions with up to 12" of snow falling over night..looks like my tulips won't be up for some time! two weeks ago we had 2FEET! Grrr!! Love the Calla Lilly..
Wow, I know you say they're late this year, but it's so early compared to us! Mine are just barely coming up out of the ground now. So pretty. I'm with you, even just one flower from your own garden in the house is somethin' special.
Calla Lilies are so lovely in form and so nice that you have them blooming in your own yard!
Very pretty, Olga! I can only dream of having Calla Lilies growing in my yard! I know what you mean about the flowers not being fresh when grown so far away. A single rose or two Calla Lilies are just as beautiful as a whole bouquet when grown with love. Hope your week is lovely. xx
They look so wonderful! I love white flowers, they always attract my eyes :)
Nice blog
I love Calla Lilies! Your blog is beautiful! Nice to meet you :)
I love calla lilies but have a hard time growing them. Only one or two will come up.
