Growing Lettuce the Thrifty Way

What I want to share today is the way I grow my lettuce.

Have you ever bought living lettuce? It is called so because it comes with roots, which help keep the lettuce fresh for longer time. I bought it a few times from Costco for $2.29 for two huge heads (one butterhead and one lollo rosso) . This in itself is a pretty good deal; however, there is more to it.

After I finish the lettuce, I don’t throw away the roots, but plant them in a container in my yard. I water them as needed, and about three weeks later I get a new head of lettuce.
So far, I planted six of such leftover roots. Two of them were planted recently, but the other four are already providing us with fresh and crispy greens. I don’t cut off the heads completely, just pinch off some leaves as needed.

This week I am joining a gardening party called Fertilizer Friday hosted by Tootsie. She and the other participants have wonderful gardening stuff to show. I do hope to join it frequently in the future.

Hi Olga..
What a wondeful tip! I have never heard of living lettuce. I do this with green onions I use the tops then plant the root and repeat.

Now that is interesting! I grow garden lettuce and I have been cutting off the top and leaving the roots. It grows back. Am going to try that with my spinach too. Enjoy yummy salads with your living lettuce!

I have never tried living lettuce, because the cheap kind seemed... well.. cheaper, but knowing that you can replant the roots makes it a very good deal. What a great tip!

I only have a tiny balcony so I just buy living herbs but at least I have them fresh for my dishes.
